VOTER-APPROVED PROJECTS

Scotch Plains-Fanwood voters approved a plan to:

  • Upgrade HVAC, electrical, and fire alarm systems across all schools, as well as universal air conditioning.
  • Purchase the La Grande Building at 330 South Avenue in Fanwood to serve as one location for all pre-kindergarten classes, freeing up nine classrooms across the elementary schools and easing space constraints.
  • Fund the annual operating costs of La Grande, including salaries and benefits for staff.

The bidding process ensures fairness and requires the district to pursue the lowest price from qualified bidders.

The following bids have been approved:

Sale of Bonds

$44.77 million for the improvements; state contributed $11.4 million

The district worked closely with its financial advisor to determine the most fiscally responsible approach to selling the bonds. The best option was to sell in two phases:

  • April 2025: First sale for La Grande Elementary School purchase (30 year bond)
  • Anticipated November 2025: Second sale to fund electrical and HVAC (20 year bond)

Structuring it this way saves the district over $5 million in interest costs.

Estimated Tax Impact

  • Scotch Plains: Estimated $14/month for owner of home assessed at Scotch Plains’ average ($126,191)
  • Fanwood: Estimated $12/month for owner of home assessed at Fanwood’s average ($469,385)
